Racist/Not Racist

At the end of a lengthy exchange, Tapper asked: "If you are saying he cannot do his job because of his race, is that not the definition of racism?"

Trump first broached these waters in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Thursday, in which he said Curiel, who was born in Indiana, had an "inherent conflict of interest" in the Trump University lawsuit.

 And.

“Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences,” she said, for jurists who are women and nonwhite, “our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging.” 

Both say that a judge's ethnic background can affect how he/she rules. Why is one acceptable and the other isn't?

Telemundo Staging Shots at Protest

And today we learn that if you're under 18 you can hit someone's camera and spit at them and some twit will defend it because you're "obviously a minor". Clearly too immature to be at a protest unsupervised.

Fast and Furious Emails

Yesterday I wrote about how Acapulco has come under the grip of terror by drug cartels. One thing that makes the situation in Mexico possible is our war on drugs. Another thing that hasn't helped was the Fast and Furious program that sold guns to criminals to take into Mexico.

New emails have been released that show what many suspected by has been hard to prove so far:

Fast and Furious was a Justice Department program that allowed assault weapons — including .50-caliber rifles powerful enough to take down a helicopter — to be sold to Mexican drug cartels allegedly as a way to track them. But internal documents later revealed the real goal was to gin up a crisis requiring a crackdown on guns in America. Fast and Furious was merely a pretext for imposing stricter gun laws.

This video was from 2009. He can say with certainty that the guns in Mexico were purchased in the U.S. because he allowed the program that sold guns to drug cartels. Beyond the lie where he pretends our Second Amendment is what's responsible for Mexican gun crime, he also says that 90% of the guns recovered there are traceable back to the U.S. It was actually 90% of the ones that are traceable, a minority of them because most are untraceable, can be traced back to the U.S.

Sunny Acapulco

The tourist attraction has become a battleground for a gang war.

Acapulco's latest wave of killings began April 24, when bursts of gunfire broke out along the coastal boulevard. It was the first time such sustained shooting had been seen there since the darkest days of 2012, when the murder rate in this city of 800,000 hit 146 per 100,000 inhabitants. It has since fallen to about 112 per 100,000, but that remains far higher than nationwide levels and appears to be on the rise again. 

Mexico's response is to set up temporary martial law but troops get moved to the next hotspot as soon as there's another emergency.

You can certainly sympathize with the people who want to escape this. You can also see that along with those people, others who are causing the violence will also want to follow to expand their territories of influence.

The best thing we can do for Mexico isn't allowing unfettered illegal immigration, it's to stop our war on drugs that fuels the power these drug cartels have.
