I Take Responsibility

From last night's Town Hall debate:

Hillary Clinton: I've said before, but I'll repeat it, because I want everyone to hear it -- that was a mistake, and I take responsibility for using a personal e-mail account. Obviously, if I were to do it over again, I would not. I'm not making any excuses. It was a mistake. And I am very sorry about that. 

No. Admitting what everyone knows isn't "taking responsibility". If a man fathered a child and did nothing more than admit the child was his, didn't take part in raising it or help support it, would you say he took responsibility? If you came back to find your parked car with a big dent in it and a note that said, "I'm responsible, sorry!" would you be satisfied?

Clinton got away with saying she bore responsibility for Benghazi. And saying she takes responsibility running her own illegal private email server. I just wish that the next time she says, "I take responsibility" someone asks her, "How?". In what way has she or will she take responsibility?

Priorities

Priorities USA, a super-PAC that's backing Hillary Clinton, accepted $200,000 in donations from a company holding contracts worth $976,560 with the Department of Defense for maintenance and construction projects at a Naval base in Newport, R.I., and the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Clinton's priorities are power and money. This PAC that supports her obviously agrees. This company isn't the biggest donor to the PAC, that title goes to George Soros who's donated (so far) $6,000,000. The PAC has donated $1,000,000 to Correct the Record which pays people to go online and disagree with social media users who say something negative about Hillary Clinton. (As far as I can tell, what it's mostly done is make everyone assume that anyone who defends her is getting paid to do so. It must make her actual supporters - assuming there are any who know how to internet - feel like chumps.)

When Dissent Becomes Illegal

A landmark California bill gaining steam would make it illegal to engage in climate-change dissent.

They want to make it illegal to disagree with them. Tell me again how Trump's the dangerous one.

Tell It to a Jockey

Miss Universe 1996 has called Trump a bully for requiring her to work out when she gained a noticeable amount of weight after winning the beauty pageant - a pageant she chose to enter, knowing that she would be judged on her looks.

Jockeys who ride racehorses have to meet weight requirements set by the racetracks. The Kentucky Derby (Run for the Roses) has a weight limit of 126 pounds, which includes about 7 pounds of equipment.

Different jobs have different requirements. Beauty queens and jockeys need to watch their weight. These aren't the kind of jobs that someone just falls into because there was nothing else available. Both take determination and a desire to succeed at that particular thing. You make a choice, then you fulfill your obligation.

Does anyone think that she should get a pass just because she was a young woman? Teachers, doctors, tradespeople all have to take continuing education classes to be able to keep working. If your job requires a uniform and you won't wear it, you'll get fired. Come to work drunk or hung over and it would be reasonable to expect to get fired. All jobs have some rules you have to follow. She broke the rules. Instead of being replaced with the first runner-up, she was given a chance to come back into compliance and somehow that makes Trump a meanie. Yay, women power!

(This gets a "Hypocrites" tag because, seriously, if anyone else in a regular wage-slave job were told to adhere to the rules under which they were hired, it would be a non-story.)

Just "Likely"?

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is likely to interview Hillary Clinton in the next few weeks about her use of a private email server while she was U.S. secretary of state and have already interviewed some of her aides, CNN reported on Thursday.

Cruz Tries to Be Relevant

Another day of The Donald sucking up all of the media attention and another day of Cruz trying to get noticed.

Donald Trump: Transgender people should be able to use whatever bathroom they want.
Ted Cruz tweets: "We shouldn't be facilitating putting little girls alone in a bathroom w/ grown men. That's just a bad, bad, bad idea"

Because not forcing businesses to go to the expense of building a gender-neutral bathroom, or hiring someone to check the genitals of everyone using the bathrooms, or changing the laws - most building codes require two separate restrooms for men and women now - is exactly the same as tossing your young daughter into a den of perverts.

If you're worried about men dressed as women molesting your daughters, why aren't you worried about men molesting your sons in the men's room?

Free Speech Wall

Several events for Ohio University’s Greek Week, an annual, weeklong event focused on philanthropy, have been canceled after some Sorority and Fraternity Life members painted “Build the Wall” on an area typically designated for graffiti last week.

 Graffiti is okay, but it has to be sanctioned graffiti.

Dennis Hastert and the Law

People seem to be in agreement that Dennis Hastert did bad, shameful things when he was a wrestling coach. (I don't know why anyone is surprised at any bad news about an Illinois politician.) One could argue that it was his shame that led him to pay one of his victims over a million dollars, but if both parties agreed to this, why should the government care?

Who Is Lying, Michelle or Corey?

I can believe that Michelle Fields thought she was being pulled down by Corey Lewandowski. Maybe she never played any contact sports or games like King of the Hill when she was a child. And she's way too young to have attended a concert at Riverfront pre-1980. Her attention was on Trump and being pulled startled her and it felt worse than it looked. For her it was a rare event that happened to her.

I can also believe that Lewandowski doesn't think he did anything. He mostly only saw her from behind, his attention was more on Trump than her, and he was just moving away a random person who had gotten to close and refused to move when told to back off. It happened quickly, and for him, it could be something he has to do a lot - push or pull people away from Trump so they can get through the crowd. (I'm not saying he's always yanking people out of the way. If he grabs someone who is paying attention to him, it would be easier to pull and gently maneuver that person out of the way than it someone whose attention was elsewhere.) For him it was a common event (people crowding Trump).

This is where Fields in continuing to touch Trump after having been told to back off, before Lewandowski grabs her.

Their perceptions of what happened are different, but for similar reasons:

• their attention was on Trump
• how rare/common the event was
• who was the principal in the event - for Michelle, it became about her. For Corey, it started out being about Trump and stayed about Trump.

So, I think they can be both be telling the story the way they believe it happened. I also think that if she were a man, we never would have heard of any problem.

Stopping (Temporarily) Isn't Stumping

Chicago rally postponed.

Protesters, meanwhile, shouted “We shut s*** down” and “We stumped Trump.” Others chanted “Bernie” as supporters whipped out Bernie Sanders campaign signs.

Organizations got together to stop the rally (see the video at the :37 mark).

"Bersih 4" T-shirts Illegal in Malaysia

So a hundred thousand people wore the yellow t-shirts. What's the government going to do, arrest everyone?

The t-shirts are in protest to government corruption. Nearly $700 million had been deposited into the prime minister's personal bank account. No explanation of who or why, just his assurance that there's been no wrongdoing.

People being dissatisfied with this and expressing that dissatisfaction by wearing protest t-shirts is being called a national security threat. More like job security threat (for the politicians), but it's not as if they're suppressing free speech:

“The reality in Malaysia is that there is freedom of expression without fear of prosecution,” he said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

No 1st Amendment Right to Take Cellphone Videos of Police

A federal judge in Philadelphia has ruled that citizens don’t have a First Amendment right to take cellphone videos of police unless they are challenging or criticizing the police conduct.

 The judge did allow that they had a 4th Amendment claim, just not one under the 1st Amendment since they weren't expressing anything to the police by taking the video.
